Introduction
principles of nuclear physics that deals with the utilization of the nuclear fission process, and is concerned with the design, monitoring, operation, construction and maintenance of nuclear reactors ,nuclear power plants to generate power and auxiliary facilities, the development and fabrication of special materials, and the handling and processing of reactor products.
Nuclear engineer devise how to use the radioactive material in manufacturing ,medicine ,agriculture ,food irradiation ,space and industry.
Good aptitude and analytical skills
Interest in experimental work.
Hard working and patience.
Minimum 12th Class from science subjects (Physics ,Chemistry and Mathematics ) from any board .After completing 12th class clear the engineering entrance examination like IIT-JEE ,AIEEE , state level Pre -Engineering Test (PET) or university level examination to get admission in engineering college and complete your Bachelor of engineering in any discipline. After 12th you can also go BSc in mathematics and then MSc in physics or mathematics.
As Nuclear Engineering and Technology (NET) is a interdisciplinary programme therefore candidates having Bachelor’s degree in any branch of engineering or a Master’s degree in Physics or Mathematics and a valid GATE score are eligible to apply for M.Tech. degree
You can also go for PhD in any specialized branch of Nuclear engineering .For PhD programme a Master Degree in any branch of engineering is required.
Major Institutes offering courses in Nuclear engineering at different levels are :-
IIT ,Kanpur .( www.iitk.ac.in )-Mtech and PhD
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University ,Kakinada .( www.jntuk.edu.in ) Mtech
SRM university ,Chennai .( www.srmuniv.ac.in ) -Btech
Sastra University ,Tamilnadu .( www.sastra.edu )
Pandit Deendayal petroleum University ,Gujarat .( www.pdpu.ac.in )
Jadavpur University ,Kolkata .( www.jadavpur.edu )
There are very colleges in India offering courses in Nuclear Engineering .
Career Prospects
The scope of Nuclear Engineer is increasing day by day because of its application in various industries like in food precessing industries for food irradiation and preservation ,in safety equipment manufacturing industries for sensor and smoke detectors , in water management organization for water desalination ,in medical equipment manufacturing industries ,radioactive waste management, in medical treatment etc
Nuclear engineer have great demand in Nuclear power generation and research.India is going to increase its nuclear power generation from 4120 MW to 20000 MW by 2020 and that leaves huge demand for nuclear power equipment manufacturing , nuclear reactor construction , for operation , monitoring and for it maintenance.
Nuclear can also start his/her career in research and teaching field after doing Mtech and/or PhD in Nuclear engineering or in any specialized field of same.
Major Organization providing Job in Nuclear engineering fields are
Bhabha Atomic research center ,BARC.
Nuclear power Corporation of India Limited ,NPCIL.
Institute of plasma resrach
Raja Raman centre for Advanced technology
Larsen & Turbo
BHEL
NTPC
Punj LLYod
Tata Energy etc
Remuneration
A Nuclear Engineer can get starting salary in the range of 15000/- to 30000/- per month depending on his/her skill , type of industry , and brand name of company. After having 4-5 years of experience one can get salary in the range of 50000/- to 800000/- per month , again depend on above mentioned factors. . Sky is the limit for a talented Nuclear Engineer .
In Government sector salary is as per Government pay scale and Grade rules and regulations.
